The 15th-century Sultan Qaytbay Mosque-Mausoleum in Cairo has reopened following a two-year restoration project funded by a US Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation grant. The complex, built in 1474 during the Mamluk Sultanate (a medieval Islamic empire that ruled Egypt and the Levant), underwent repairs to its external stonemasonry and dome, while extensive cleaning uncovered much of the structure's original colour and decorative detail. An official reopening ceremony on Monday was attended by Egypt's Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, the US Embassy's Chargé d'Affaires, and representatives of Cairo-based Archinos Architecture, which carried out the restoration work between October 2022 and November 2024.
