A grassroots programme called Grassroots To Greatness (G2G) is expanding sporting opportunities for young women in northern Nigeria (a predominantly Muslim region where girls have historically faced cultural barriers to organised sport), offering training, equipment, transport support and financial stipends to players across up to nine states. Founded by youth sports advocate Jawahir Bello, the initiative holds female-only tournaments where players compete in modest athletic wear, including custom hijabs, allowing participants to remain culturally observant while competing. The programme is drawing attention as a model for community-led sports development, with participants like Kano State player Khamila Sani Ibrahim citing ambitions of college scholarships in the United States and using sport to inspire other Muslim girls across the region.
