Nearly a month of demonstrations across France, which began with high school pupils and gained support from university students, has widened into a broader movement over fuel prices, housing costs and government policy, with unions calling large protests for Saturday and online calls for the gilets jaunes (the 2018 anti-government movement that paralysed much of France) to join. More than 7,000 people, mostly minors, have reportedly been arrested, and the radical-left La France Insoumise has accused police of overstepping their limits, while supporters of the far-right Rassemblement National want the protests and violence to end. A recent Ipsos poll found 54 percent of French people back the protests and 40 percent oppose them, and the government has so far offered only limited concessions such as calling up 3,000 substitute teachers.
