Wildfires raging across West Kalimantan, Indonesia, have come within metres of the Yiari wildlife rehabilitation centre, forcing staff to relocate 60 orangutans — many rescued from traffickers — to safer enclosures within the facility. The region has gone more than 40 days without rain, and Indonesia recorded more than three times as many forest fire hotspots in the first half of August as it did during the entire same month last year, with conditions worsened by El Niño and climate change. Authorities have deployed water-bombing aircraft and the situation stabilised by Thursday evening, but meteorologists warn that the driest and most fire-prone months — September and October — are still to come.
