Two employees at Frankfurt Airport in Germany have died after contracting malaria in a rare outbreak believed to have been caused by infected mosquitoes transported into the country on an aircraft. A total of six male airport workers were infected, all of whom work in different roles and different areas of the airport, and none of whom is known to have travelled to a malaria-endemic region. The other four infected workers received medical treatment and are reported to be recovering.
German public health authorities believe the infections are a case of so-called "airport malaria", a rare but documented phenomenon that occurs when an infected mosquito — most likely an Anopheles mosquito — is carried aboard an aircraft or hidden in luggage and later bites people at or near the airport. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Germany's federal public health and disease control agency, confirmed the first four cases after workers fell ill between 4 and 6 July. The total number of infections subsequently rose to six, with the two fatalities occurring in July and August respectively. The last recorded case of airport malaria at Frankfurt Airport was in 2023.
Mosquito traps have been installed across the airport and captured insects are being sent to specialist laboratories — including the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium — for genetic analysis to determine their species and geographic origin. Results are not expected for several weeks. Frankfurt's Public Health Department is leading the investigation, while airport operator Fraport says it has briefed all staff and urged anyone with symptoms to seek medical attention promptly.
Authorities have emphasised that the risk to the wider Frankfurt population remains very low. Malaria cannot be transmitted directly between people; it requires the bite of an infected mosquito. However, the RKI has warned that workers without a travel history to malaria-endemic areas may not initially be suspected of having the disease, leading to delayed diagnosis — a factor that significantly increases the risk of severe illness or death.
Malaria is caused by parasites spread through the bites of certain mosquito species and is most prevalent in tropical regions, particularly sub-Saharan Africa, where it kills hundreds of thousands of people each year. Although the disease is both preventable and curable, it can prove fatal when treatment is not administered quickly enough. The Frankfurt outbreak is a reminder that in an era of global air travel, diseases associated with distant regions can, in rare circumstances, reach countries where they are otherwise almost unknown.
