Some 65,000 teachers in the Madrid region, who instruct more than 666,000 pupils from nursery through baccalaureate and vocational training, are called to an indefinite strike starting Wednesday, with unions warning that schools will "come to a complete halt". Madrid's two large public universities, the Complutense and Rey Juan Carlos, are joining on the first day. The walkout matters because it could disrupt education for hundreds of thousands of students across Spain's capital region, in a dispute centred on pay and working conditions.
