The Resolution Foundation, a UK economic thinktank, has warned that rising energy prices driven by the Middle East conflict could leave the typical British working-age household £480 worse off this year, tipping expected income growth of 0.9% into a 0.6% decline. Oil and gas prices have surged since fighting began in late February following US and Israeli strikes on Iran, with Brent crude trading back above $100 a barrel, pushing up household gas, electricity, and petrol costs. The foundation is urging the UK government to fast-track a social tariff — a discounted energy rate for vulnerable households — ahead of winter, warning that the financial damage to household budgets is "to a large degree already done."
