Newly crowned world champion Brandon McNulty of the United States finished tenth in the Giro dell'Emilia, his first race in the rainbow jersey, a week after his surprise world title in Montreal. The 28-year-old attacked repeatedly and stayed with the lead group until the final 20 kilometres, before being dropped when Italy's Davide Piganzoli of Visma-Lease a Bike made his winning move on the San Luca climb (a 2.1km ascent above Bologna, tackled five times in the autumn one-day race). Piganzoli held off Britons Tom Pidcock and Oscar Onley by three seconds after 197.9km from Ferrara to Bologna, helped by team-mates Ben Tulett and Matteo Jorgenson, who finished fourth and fifth.
