Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran on Tuesday, seeking to reinvigorate Islamabad's mediation efforts between Iran and the United States over the closure of the Strait of Hormuz (the narrow waterway through which roughly a fifth of global oil supplies pass). The visit aims to follow up on a June agreement — known as the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding — which has stalled as Oman took the lead in separate talks over shipping arrangements through the strait. Iran has maintained that a full reopening of the waterway is contingent on the US ending its military campaign, lifting its naval blockade on Iranian ports, releasing frozen Iranian assets, and agreeing to a region-wide ceasefire including in Gaza and Lebanon — conditions Washington has not yet accepted.
