Dutch infrastructure authority Rijkswaterstaat (the Netherlands' national road and waterway management agency) is installing automatic licence-plate recognition cameras on the Merwedebrug near Gorinchem to enforce a freight traffic ban, with fines of €500 per violation expected to be issued within two weeks. The bridge, which carries the A27 motorway linking the provinces of Noord-Brabant and Zuid-Holland, was closed indefinitely to heavy vehicles last Saturday after inspections revealed the steel structure is weaker than previously assessed, posing a risk of deformation under heavy loads. Trucks are being redirected via the A16 and A2 motorways, while cars, motorcycles, vans, buses, and emergency vehicles remain permitted to cross; a replacement bridge is already in the planning stages, with construction due to begin this summer.
