Spain's National Police have arrested 24 people and dismantled two linked criminal organisations operating speedboat smuggling routes between Morocco and the Andalusian provinces of Almería and Granada (coastal regions in southern Spain). The investigation, codenamed Operation Embrión, began in October 2024 after a boat carrying 24 migrants was intercepted off Almería; police traced those responsible to networks providing logistical and mechanical support for drug and people smuggling, charging up to €15,000 per passenger and identified across at least 38 crossings averaging 20–25 people each. Fourteen of the suspects are already in pre-trial detention, and authorities seized 23 vessels, two shotguns, a drone, four high-end vehicles, over €80,000 in cash, and quantities of marijuana and tobacco.
