Four people were killed on Saturday when a sightseeing helicopter crashed inside Tijuca National Park in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The victims were the aircraft's pilot and three Colombian women — a 59-year-old woman, her 37-year-old daughter, and her 17-year-old granddaughter — who were on a tourist flight over the densely forested mountain terrain. The crash site was located near Vista Chinesa, a popular lookout point in the park known for its panoramic views of the city and marked by a small bamboo pagoda.
The three women were part of a family of six who had travelled to Rio de Janeiro to celebrate a girl's 15th birthday. Because the helicopter could only accommodate three passengers, the group had split into two, with the son, daughter-in-law, and second granddaughter waiting for the aircraft to return before taking their own flight. According to Diana Páez, Colombia's consul general in Rio de Janeiro, the victims were the girl's grandmother, aunt, and cousin. After the crash, the helicopter caught fire, but the rugged and densely wooded terrain made it difficult for emergency services to reach the wreckage quickly.
Tijuca National Park, one of the world's largest urban forests, sits on the hills surrounding Rio de Janeiro and is a major tourist destination — home to the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue and offering sweeping views of the coastal city below. Helicopter sightseeing tours have grown increasingly popular in recent years as a way for visitors to take in these landmarks from the air, but the practice has drawn mounting concern over safety standards.
Saturday's crash comes less than two months after six people, including a well-known singer, were killed when two helicopters collided in mid-air over the western Rio suburb of Recreio dos Bandeirantes on 14 June. In response to the latest tragedy, Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Cavalcieri called for stronger oversight of helicopter operations and suggested flights could be suspended for "a week or two" while new safety measures are put in place. The city has formally requested that Brazil's National Civil Aviation Agency, ANAC, take immediate action to intensify inspections.
The back-to-back accidents raise serious questions about the regulation of low-altitude tourist flights over one of the world's most visited cities. With helicopter tours multiplying to meet tourist demand, pressure is growing on both municipal and federal authorities to impose stricter safety frameworks before further tragedies occur.
