Peruvian prosecutors have formally charged leftist presidential candidate Roberto Sanchez with financial crimes, seeking a prison sentence of five years and four months over allegedly false campaign finance disclosures filed between 2018 and 2020. Sanchez, candidate of the Juntos por el Peru (Together for Peru) party and running with the backing of jailed former President Pedro Castillo, is accused alongside his brother of concealing more than 280,000 soles ($81,720) in contributions and membership fees; prosecutors are also seeking his permanent disqualification from the presidency. The charges were unsealed hours after electoral results confirmed Sanchez is on course to face conservative rival Keiko Fujimori in a presidential run-off on 7 June, with a judge set to rule on 27 May whether the case will proceed to trial.
