At least 41 people have died and 49 others rescued after a boat carrying around 100 passengers and cargo capsized on Lake Tanganyika (one of the world's deepest lakes, bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Burundi, and Zambia) early Thursday. The vessel was travelling from the Tanzanian port of Kigoma to the Congolese city of Kalemie when it sank near the village of Mapera; a survivor told a UN-backed radio station that passengers awoke around 1am to find the boat already tilting. The cause remains unclear, but authorities say search operations are ongoing, and the disaster reflects a broader pattern of deadly water transport accidents in the DRC, where vessels are routinely overloaded, life jackets are scarce, and boat travel remains the most affordable option for millions in one of the world's poorest countries.
