Manchester City eased into the last 16 of the English League Cup with a commanding 5-0 victory over Norwich City on Thursday, with 17-year-old Floyd Samba stealing the headlines on his senior debut at the Etihad Stadium. The result secured City's place in the fourth round, where they will face Brighton & Hove Albion.
City manager Enzo Maresca, the Italian coach who guided the club to League Cup glory last season, rotated heavily from the side that beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Premier League the previous weekend, fielding a team blended from youth prospects and fringe players. The only survivor from that starting lineup was French midfielder Rayan Cherki. Norwich, currently 14th in the Championship — England's second tier — offered little resistance against an attack that rarely relented.
Samba, an English midfielder typically used in the under-18 setup, was deployed in an unfamiliar centre-forward role but adapted with ease. He opened the scoring in the 29th minute with a precise header from a cross by Allan Andrade, capitalising on poor goalkeeping from the Norwich shot-stopper. Cherki doubled the lead three minutes later, finishing coolly after being threaded through by Moroccan midfielder Ayoub Bouaddi. Early in the second half, Andrade himself got on the scoresheet with a slaloming run into the box and a low finish, before Samba added his second with a close-range strike in the 54th minute. Substitute Ryan McAidoo rounded off the rout in the 90th minute, converting a cut-back from Nico O'Reilly.
"To get a debut like that is mind blowing. I couldn't believe it myself, but that is just the beginning — I have got a big career ahead of me," Samba told the BBC, crediting advice from senior teammates with giving him the confidence to perform. Maresca named him man of the match.
The victory extends City's strong start to the season. Despite losing the Community Shield to Arsenal before the campaign began, they have now won four consecutive matches in all competitions and sit joint top of the Premier League. In the League Cup's last 16, 13 Premier League clubs are joined by League One sides Peterborough United and Bradford City, while fourth-tier Fleetwood Town will host defending champions Arsenal. Those matches are scheduled for 27–29 October.
