Mozambique's President Daniel Chapo said on Sunday that illegally held firearms will be forcibly collected after December, when a police amnesty expires; anyone who hands in weapons before then will not be questioned, punished or detained. Speaking at a police special operations graduation, he urged officers to act within the law and respect human rights while tackling crimes such as trafficking, kidnapping and cybercrime. The warning comes as Cabo Delgado (Mozambique's northern gas-rich province, hit by a jihadist insurgency since 2017) remains unstable, with a UN rapporteur saying attacks on civilians rose over the past year despite Rwandan and Tanzanian troop support.
