Dutch motocross rider Jeffrey Herlings claimed victory in the first moto of the MXGP Grand Prix of Trentino, held at the Il Ciclamino circuit in Pietramurata, northern Italy, after charging from outside the top ten following a difficult start. The 31-year-old Honda rider closed a 15-second gap to race leader Romain Febvre midway through the moto, overtaking Febvre, Tim Gajser, and teammate Tom Vialle in quick succession to take the win. Championship leader Lucas Coenen (19-year-old Belgian and current MXGP points leader) crashed while running second early in the race and recovered to only twelfth place, cutting his lead over Herlings from 22 points down to just six.
