Saudi Arabia has ordered schools to close after heavy rainfall caused severe flooding in parts of the country. Swamped roads were reported around the capital, Riyadh, and in the Al Ahsa governorate (a large oasis region in the Eastern Province). The disruption highlights the recurring challenge of flash floods in the Arabian Peninsula, where infrastructure can struggle to cope with intense but infrequent rainfall events.
