Pakistan has recorded its sixth polio case of the year, the National Emergency Operations Centre for Polio Eradication said, involving a seven-year-old boy in Khyber district in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The case came less than a week after the fifth, and five of the six cases this year have been in the province, four of them in the Bannu division, where security problems hamper vaccination work. Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only countries where polio is still endemic, and officials are planning a further vaccination drive using oral and injectable vaccines for older children.
