Spanish authorities, working with Europol (the European Union's law enforcement agency), have dismantled one of the largest maritime human-trafficking networks operating in the Western Mediterranean. The operation resulted in 78 arrests — 77 in Spain and one in Algeria — along with the seizure of 18 motorboats, drugs, weapons, satellite phones and over 25,000 euros in cash. The network ran a two-way smuggling route between Algeria and Spain, trafficking drugs southward and packing boats with migrants for the return journey to the Spanish coast, and its dismantling comes just days after tens of thousands of migrants crossed into Ceuta, Spain's North African enclave bordering Morocco.
