Former Algerian Industry Minister Ali Aoun has been sentenced to five years in prison by the Economic and Financial Criminal Court in Algiers, after being convicted on charges of corruption, mismanagement, and the unlawful awarding of industrial contracts involving the trade in metal waste and copper residues. Several other senior figures were convicted in the same case, including Aoun's son Mehdi, who received a six-year term, with other defendants — including investors and a state company official — sentenced to between three and ten years. The convictions form part of a broader anticorruption drive pursued by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who has targeted high-ranking officials since coming to power in 2019 following widespread pro-democracy protests.
