A 46-year-old Australian man has been arrested at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi international airport after the naked body of a 17-year-old Thai girl was discovered inside a black suitcase near a railway track in Pattaya, a popular seaside resort city located approximately 100 kilometres southeast of Bangkok on Thailand's eastern Gulf coast.
According to Pattaya city police, CCTV footage captured the suspect entering an apartment building with the teenage girl shortly after 3.30am on Thursday. Several hours later, he was seen leaving the building alone, carrying a large black suitcase, which he then transported on the back of a motorbike. The girl's friends reported her missing the following afternoon. Police were able to reconstruct her movements and traced the suspect's route, which appeared to show him travelling along the railway line before returning to the hotel. The suitcase — containing the girl's body, which bore signs of violence including marks consistent with a struggle — was found on Friday evening near a railway track, roughly ten minutes from the hotel.
Authorities issued a watch notice to immigration officers and intercepted the suspect at Suvarnabhumi airport on Friday night as he was preparing to board a Jetstar flight to Perth, in his home country of Australia. Media reports identified him as being from Ballarat, a city in the state of Victoria. During questioning, he provided information about where the suitcase had been discarded, which led officers to the location of the body. Thai police noted that he had scratches on his neck and arms consistent with a struggle; when asked about them, he reportedly said he thought they were caused by a spider.
The man denies any involvement in the girl's abduction and death. Investigators are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination and additional forensic evidence before formally filing charges, which could include murder, concealment of a body, child abduction, and abduction of a minor for sexual purposes. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the detained Australian national but declined to comment further, citing privacy obligations.
The case has drawn significant attention given the gravity of the alleged crime and the extensive CCTV trail that reportedly links the suspect to the victim. It underscores ongoing concerns about the safety of young women in tourist areas and the role of surveillance infrastructure in enabling rapid police responses.
