Five coal miners have died in two separate accidents in Balochistan (Pakistan's largest and most resource-rich province), officials confirmed on Wednesday. In the first incident, three miners — identified as Murad Bakhsh, Ali Hassan, and Dilawar Khan — suffocated after methane gas accumulated in a coal mine near Mach, in the Bolan coalfield area; the affected mine has since been sealed and an investigation ordered. In a second, unrelated accident in the Duki coalfield, two miners died after a coal-laden trolley struck a group of workers, highlighting the persistently dangerous conditions faced by miners in a region that supplies much of Pakistan's coal.
