The Malawian government announced the initiative on 2 June, by which point 2,449 nationals had already returned home independently through the Mwanza and Dedza border posts — a surge immigration officials attributed directly to the violence. The repatriation, to be conducted by bus, is open only to those who have requested assistance, with full logistics still to be confirmed; authorities have also warned citizens to beware of scammers posing as government officials, directing anyone seeking help to contact the High Commission in Pretoria or the Consulate General in Johannesburg through official numbers.
