A private jet crashed onto a busy motorway near Laredo (a city in southern Texas, close to the Mexican border) on Tuesday after the aircraft declared a mechanical emergency en route from Los Cabos, Mexico, to Austin. Bystanders and first responders used tools including a shovel and sledgehammer to break windows and free those trapped inside, with video footage showing the plane engulfed in thick smoke and flames. One of the six people on board was killed, five survivors were hospitalised in stable condition, and five first responders were treated for smoke inhalation; the crash forced the closure of the major Loop 20 motorway, with an investigation by the FBI and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) expected to continue into Wednesday.
