Rory McIlroy has claimed his second consecutive Masters title at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia, finishing the 90th edition of the tournament on 12-under par with a total score of 276, one stroke ahead of world number one Scottie Scheffler. The Northern Irishman becomes only the fourth player in history to win the Masters in back-to-back years, joining Jack Nicklaus (1965–66), Nick Faldo (1989–90), and Tiger Woods (2001–02).
The final round was anything but straightforward. American Cameron Young, who had shared the overnight lead with McIlroy after a chaotic third round that saw both players find water on the back nine, squandered a two-stroke advantage late in the day. Veteran English golfer Justin Rose also surged into contention, briefly finding himself atop the leaderboard before his challenge faded. Augusta National's notorious swirling winds made precise shot-making exceptionally difficult, unsettling several contenders at critical moments.
McIlroy himself was not immune to nerves. After regaining his rhythm with accurate drives down the fairway and a series of confident putts, he stumbled again on the 18th hole with a wayward tee shot — only to benefit from a fortunate bounce that limited the damage and allowed him to hold on. Scheffler, the reigning world number one and a two-time Masters champion (2022 and 2024), mounted a late charge with several birdies but could not close the gap in time.
The Masters, one of golf's four major championships, is held annually at Augusta National and is widely considered one of the sport's most prestigious events. Its winner receives the iconic green jacket, a symbol of golfing excellence recognised worldwide.
McIlroy's victory cements his status as the dominant force in men's golf at the moment. Having spent much of the previous decade narrowly missing out on major titles, his back-to-back Masters wins signal a decisive shift. For Scheffler, despite holding the world number one ranking, the result is another near-miss at a major he has come close to winning multiple times. With the remaining majors of the 2026 season still to come, both men are expected to remain central to the sport's biggest storylines throughout the year.
