Resil B. Mojares, one of the Philippines' most celebrated writers, historians, and literary critics, died on the morning of September 5, just one day after his 83rd birthday. Mojares, who was conferred the title of National Artist for Literature in 2018, was a towering figure in both Filipino and Cebuano cultural scholarship, best known for works including "House of Memory" and "The War Against the Americans: Resistance and Collaboration in Cebu, 1899–1906," and for founding the Cebuano Studies Center at the University of San Carlos in Cebu City. His passing has drawn tributes from fellow writers, literary organisations, and government bodies, with fellow National Artist Virgilio Almario describing the loss as a major blow to the history of Bisayan literature.
