The Los Angeles Lakers are on the verge of a first-round playoff sweep after defeating the Houston Rockets 112-108 in overtime in Game 3 on Friday, taking a commanding 3-0 series lead in their Western Conference first-round matchup. The victory was driven by a remarkable late-game performance from LeBron James, who rescued the Lakers from what appeared to be certain defeat with one of the most dramatic sequences of this postseason.
With Houston leading 101-95 and fewer than 30 seconds left in regulation, the Rockets appeared to have the game in hand. But a foul on Marcus Smart — who was attempting a three-pointer — sent him to the line, where he converted all three free throws to cut the deficit to 101-98. James then forced a turnover in the backcourt and immediately drained a three-pointer to tie the game at 101 with 13.6 seconds remaining. A potential go-ahead attempt by Houston centre Alperen Sengun missed, James's buzzer attempt fell short, and the game went to overtime. Smart, the veteran point guard, took over in the extra period, scoring eight of his 21 points as the Lakers pulled away for the 112-108 win. James finished with 29 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and three steals.
The outcome was particularly striking given the injury situations on both sides. The Lakers were missing leading scorer Luka Doncic, sidelined by a hamstring strain, as well as Austin Reaves, who is out with an oblique injury. Houston, meanwhile, played without Kevin Durant — their veteran star — for the second time in the series, following an ankle sprain he suffered in Game 2. Sengun carried much of the offensive burden for the young Rockets, finishing with 33 points and 16 rebounds, while Amen Thompson added 26 points and 11 rebounds. Rui Hachimura contributed 22 points for Los Angeles off the bench.
