Mount Kanlaon, an active volcano on Negros island in the central Philippines, erupted on Saturday, sending thick plumes of smoke and ash as high as 6 kilometres into the sky. Eruptions of this scale can disrupt air travel, endanger nearby communities and damage crops, and the Philippines (an archipelago on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where volcanic and seismic activity is frequent) regularly faces such hazards.
