Maulana Muhammad Idrees, a senior religious figure and district leader of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) party, was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen on Tuesday in Charsadda, a district in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province. Two police officers accompanying him were also wounded in the attack. KP's chief minister, governor, and police chief all condemned the killing and ordered investigations, while former senator Mushtaq Ahmed Khan questioned when terrorism in the province would end. Idrees was a close adviser to JUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman and the son-in-law of Maulana Hassan Jan, who was himself killed by the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan for opposing armed militancy.
