Al Mughayyir boys' school in the West Bank village of Al Mughayyir has endured a year of relentless violence, with five students killed and the surrounding community cut off by Israeli military checkpoints and settler encroachments. In April, a 14-year-old pupil was shot dead near the school's playground gate; English teacher Waheed Abu Naim, who rushed the boy to hospital, simultaneously learned that his own brother had been killed in the same attack. The Guardian's senior Middle East correspondent Emma Graham-Harrison, who documented the crisis, warned that even against a backdrop of widespread deadly violence across the occupied West Bank, targeting a school full of children represents an especially grave escalation — and that further violence in the coming months appears likely.
