The Democratic Republic of Congo's ongoing Ebola outbreak has killed more than 3,000 people, with official figures recorded on Wednesday showing 3,007 deaths among 6,186 confirmed cases — a fatality rate of nearly 49%. The outbreak, centred in the conflict-affected northeastern province of Ituri and now spread across six provinces, is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, for which no approved vaccine or treatment currently exists. The World Health Organization is coordinating an expansion of the Lita treatment centre in Ituri to add 42 beds, while a clinical trial of the Ervebo vaccine — approved only for the related Zaire strain — is under way, with over 16,000 doses already delivered to frontline workers.
