Brazil has filed a $97m lawsuit against the messaging platform Discord, alleging it failed to comply with laws designed to protect children and teenagers online. The case follows a high-profile incident in July in which a 13-year-old girl died by suicide during a Discord livestream in Mato Grosso do Sul (a state in western Brazil) after being pressured by other users, prompting authorities to order the platform to suspend its streaming services. The lawsuit is part of a broader crackdown by the Brazilian government on tech companies over child safety, coming just a day after regulators fined TikTok $30m for child privacy violations; Discord has disputed the legal action, saying it does not accurately reflect its compliance with Brazilian law.
