Denmark's parliament has voted to pay €40,000 each to women who were subjected to forced IUD insertions as part of a mass contraception campaign carried out from the 1960s onward, when Denmark controlled Greenland's healthcare system. At least 4,300 women and girls received the devices, in some cases without their knowledge or consent; one victim, Elisa Tove Christiansen, was just 13 years old when the procedure left her requiring a hysterectomy. Around 203 women are set to receive compensation under the measure, which passed by roughly 100 votes to 10, though advocates hope more survivors will come forward to claim the reparations they are owed.
