Canada will make its debut at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2027, becoming the first new country to join the competition since Australia in 2015. The announcement was made on Canada Day — a national holiday — by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which organises the contest, and Canada's public broadcaster CBC/Radio-Canada. The 2027 contest will be held in Sofia, Bulgaria, after Bulgarian pop star Dara won this year's competition with her song Bangaranga.
The path for Canada's participation was opened last week when CBC/Radio-Canada became a full member of the EBU. Membership of the union — not geography — determines eligibility to compete, which is why non-European countries such as Israel and Australia have long taken part.
