India's Supreme Court has banned all construction and development within 100 metres of the Jojari River in Rajasthan (a water-scarce state in northwestern India), and prohibited hazardous industries within 500 metres of the river's flow path. The ruling, issued on 24 August 2026 by a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta in a suo motu case, is part of a series of court orders aimed at protecting the seasonal river, whose contamination has affected around two million people. The court also asked the Rajasthan government to prepare a 20-point plan to address pollution across the Jojari, Bandi, and Luni rivers, and suggested authorities consider eventually relocating industries situated along their banks.
