Ethiopia's foreign ministry says it is actively engaged in negotiations with Riyadh after Human Rights Watch warned that at least 58 Ethiopian migrants face imminent execution in Saudi Arabia, mostly on drug-trafficking charges. The detainees are held in Khamis Mushait, near the Yemeni border, and the rights group says they were denied adequate legal representation or interpreters during brief collective hearings — sometimes lasting under ten minutes — and were made to sign documents they could not understand. Addis Ababa points to a royal pardon already granted to nearly 2,000 Ethiopian nationals as evidence of diplomatic progress, though Human Rights Watch says there is no indication the 58 men facing execution have yet received any consular assistance.
