Sahra, a former education administrator from el-Geneina in Sudan's West Darfur state, has become head teacher at a primary school established in a refugee camp in eastern Chad (a landlocked country bordering Sudan that now hosts nearly one million Sudanese refugees). The school, set up in 2024 by Plan International and partner organisations, serves over 1,000 pupils across two daily shifts, with teachers and staff recruited from the refugee community itself. The initiative matters beyond the classroom: with Sudan's civil war having uprooted millions since April 2023, camp families see schooling as protection from violence and recruitment by criminal groups, even as the broader refugee response remains critically underfunded, receiving just 17 percent of the resources required.
