Two people have been killed at a private school in Gosen-Neu Zittau, a small town of around 3,500 residents located approximately eight kilometres southeast of Berlin, in what German authorities have described as a domestic violence incident. Brandenburg state police arrested a 19-year-old German man shortly after the attack on Thursday afternoon, saying he is "considered a prime suspect." Authorities were clear that the incident was not a mass shooting and said there was no ongoing threat to those at the school.

The victims were an 18-year-old female student and a 30-year-old man who died after attempting to intervene and stop the attacker. Local media reported that the suspect is believed to be the ex-boyfriend of the young woman who was killed. It remains unclear whether the suspect was himself a student at the Docemus school, a private campus set amid woodland and lakes that houses several levels of secondary education under one roof.

The attack drew swift and sombre reactions from regional officials. Ulrike Liedtke, speaker of Brandenburg's state parliament, condemned what she called a "cowardly femicide," expressing both grief and anger that a woman had once again been killed by a male partner, and that a bystander who showed moral courage had also lost his life. Brandenburg's state premier Dietmar Woidke described it as an "unimaginable act of violence."

The school's managing director, Michael Kunz, announced that regular classes would be cancelled on Friday, but that the building would remain open as a safe space for students who wished to come together, speak with one another, and begin to process the trauma. He said decisions about the structure of school life in the coming days would be made carefully.

The incident is the latest in a series of attacks at German schools. Last month, two girls were seriously wounded in a separate assault at a secondary school in southern Germany, and a 16-year-old suspect was arrested in that case. Thursday's events are likely to renew debate in Germany about violence against women and the protection of students on school campuses.
