Mexico has opened an investigation into whether the United States deceived the country about its involvement in the 2024 capture of Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada García, a founding leader of the Sinaloa cartel (one of Mexico's most powerful drug trafficking organisations). Local outlet Pie de Nota reported that the FBI played a direct role in the operation, which saw Zambada García lured onto a plane inside Mexico and flown to Texas, where he and fellow trafficker Joaquín Guzmán López were arrested — contradicting repeated US assurances of non-involvement. Mexico's attorney general warned that if the reports are confirmed, they would point to violations of Mexican and international law, a breach of diplomatic good faith, and a serious infringement of national sovereignty — a particularly sensitive issue amid broader tensions over alleged unauthorised US intelligence operations on Mexican soil.
