A 33-year-old man from Berg en Dal has been arrested in connection with a fire that destroyed a holiday facility belonging to Stichting Wigwam (a Dutch foundation that organises holidays for young people with disabilities) in Heel, a village in the southern province of Limburg. The building had been in use for just five days when it was set alight on the night of 21–22 April; forensic investigation confirmed arson earlier this week. The suspect, who reportedly escaped from a closed institution for people with intellectual disabilities, is said to have talked openly with his caregivers, who then alerted police — and he subsequently confessed to the fire, as well as a second arson, telling investigators he derives pleasure from setting fires. The foundation's director stressed the attack was random and not directed at the organisation.
