Young members of the Igbo community in Abuja, Nigeria's capital, held a New Yam Festival with music, dancing and traditional dress, marking the start of the harvest season; the event was reported as taking place in Nigeria, not Kenya as the original prompt suggested. Organisers from the Igbo Youth Association said they wanted to give people who have lived far from their ancestral homeland a chance to take part in a tradition centred on yam (a staple crop symbolising hard work and prosperity) and on thanks to God and the ancestors. The Igbo (one of Nigeria's largest ethnic groups, based mainly in the southeast) are also seeking to show that their culture is being carried on by a new generation.
