A 32-year-old Russian woman, Margarita Reutt, has been detained by Russian authorities and accused of assassinating Robert Shageev, deputy commander of a Black Sea Fleet submarine brigade, in Sevastopol (a port city in Russian-occupied Crimea) on 13 August. A bomb concealed in a rubbish bin and containing the equivalent of roughly 500g of TNT was detonated remotely as Shageev — a former Ukrainian naval officer who defected to Russia following Moscow's 2014 annexation of Crimea — walked past in uniform. Russia's FSB security service alleges Reutt confessed to the attack and was acting on behalf of Ukrainian intelligence, which promised her cryptocurrency payment and documents to flee Russia, though Kyiv has not commented; the case is part of a broader pattern of killings of senior Russian military figures linked to Ukrainian intelligence since the start of the full-scale invasion.
