The UN's Special Rapporteur on climate change, Elisa Morgera, has warned that Mozambique is among the African countries most exposed to the 2026 "super" El Niño (a strong warming of Pacific waters that disrupts weather worldwide), which is expected to bring heatwaves, drought, cyclones and floods to Southern Africa. Speaking after an 11-day visit, she said the country has contributed little to climate change yet already faces severe strain, with 3.5 million people acutely food insecure after devastating floods earlier this year. She urged companies, especially fossil fuel firms, to respect human rights and avoid foreseeable environmental damage; Malawi and Madagascar were named as the other most vulnerable African states.
