Five male teenagers were killed and four others seriously injured after a car drove the wrong way on the M9 motorway in County Kildare (a major route southwest of Dublin), striking an oncoming vehicle in a head-on collision at around 3am on Sunday. The three women and a child travelling in the second car were hospitalised in serious or critical condition. Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly called the crash "horrific" and warned that wrong-way driving is increasingly being carried out for social media attention, noting a similar incident on Dublin's M50 motorway just one week earlier had injured nine people.
