Shapoor Zadran, a former left-arm fast bowler who represented Afghanistan from 2009 to 2020, is receiving treatment in New Delhi for hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare and potentially fatal condition in which the immune system turns against the body's own blood cells. His brother Ghamai said Zadran was briefly discharged after initial improvement but had to be readmitted when symptoms — including tuberculosis that spread to his brain — returned and worsened. Zadran, 38, was a fan favourite during Afghanistan's rise as a cricket nation and played a prominent role when the country made its Cricket World Cup debut in 2015; his illness has drawn an outpouring of support from fellow players including Pakistan legend Shahid Afridi and Afghanistan T20 captain Rashid Khan, who visited him in hospital.
