Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Friday that any attempt by India to stop or redirect Pakistan's share of water would be considered an act of war. His warning centres on India's decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) — a 1960 agreement governing the shared use of the Indus river system between the two nuclear-armed neighbours — which Sharif said had no legal basis and had already been rejected by the Permanent Court of Arbitration. Speaking against the backdrop of a brief military confrontation between the two countries earlier this year and unresolved tensions over Kashmir, Sharif also used the address to highlight Pakistan's role in brokering US-Iran diplomacy and to restate support for Palestinian statehood, calling on the international community to choose dialogue over conflict.
