Mexico became the first team to win all three of their group-stage matches at the 2026 World Cup, defeating the Czech Republic 3-0 on Wednesday at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City to top Group A with a flawless nine points. It is the first time in the country's footballing history that El Tri — as the Mexican national team is nicknamed — has won every game in the group stage of a World Cup.
Mateo Chavez, 22, broke the deadlock in the 55th minute in what was his first World Cup tournament, before Julian Quinones doubled the lead just six minutes later with his second goal of the competition — making him the first Mexico player to score more than once in a single World Cup since Javier Hernández in 2010. Álvaro Fidalgo, coming on as a substitute, added a third in stoppage time to seal the result and send the Czech Republic home with just one point from three games.
Coach Javier Aguirre, 67, who previously led Mexico at the 2002 and 2010 World Cups, acknowledged a slow start but credited his squad's resilience.
