Argentina's foreign minister, Pablo Quirno, said in Buenos Aires that his government would prevent the Falkland Islands (a British overseas territory in the South Atlantic, claimed by Argentina as Las Malvinas) from exploiting offshore oil, calling it part of a peaceful strategy to recover sovereignty. Speaking with the British ambassador in the audience, he criticised London for refusing sovereignty talks and backing the Sea Lion project in the North Falkland Basin, and warned third parties against helping the islanders develop the resources. The warning follows President Javier Milei's call at the UN for the project to stop or face arbitration, and matters because the two countries fought a war over the islands in 1982, while the UK says their future rests with the roughly 3,600 residents, who voted overwhelmingly in 2013 to remain British.
