Flooding across Assam (a northeastern Indian state prone to annual monsoon inundation) has killed at least 31 people in the current wave of floods, with 21 deaths recorded on Tuesday alone — one of the highest single-day tolls in recent memory. Eastern districts bore the brunt of the disaster, with Sivasagar accounting for nearly half of all fatalities; floodwaters have now reached 872 villages across 16 districts, displacing over 565,000 people and inundating more than 24,000 hectares of cropland. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attributed the latest surge to a cloudburst upstream, while the Brahmaputra and several other rivers continue to flow above danger levels, with tens of thousands of residents sheltering in relief camps.
